Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation for Trans-frontier Conservation Areas in Southern Africa
A SADC / GIZ Course
A regional capacity development
Training-of-Trainers’ (ToT) course on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
for SADC Transfrontier Conservation Areas
was executed by WESSA and Rhodes University from 2-6 June 2014 in
Grahamstown, South Africa, through the SADC Regional Environmental Education
programme (REEP). This ToT course is part of a project initiated by the
Southern African Development Community (SADC) in July 2013 to build human
capacity in climate change adaptation for park and resource managers, and
community leaders in the Transfrontier Conservation Areas of SADC. This was
made possible by decisions by SADC Member States and funds provided by the
German Government, through the SADC/GIZ Transboundary Protection and Use of
Natural Resources Programme. The Government of Germany provided funds in excess
of Eu200,000.00 to engage TFCA Leaders in Climate Change adaptation through
policy-practice dialogues, and to enable practitioners and communities in the
TFCAs to implement climate change adaptation and mitigation projects. The
GIZ-funded project funded was implemented between 15 July 2013 and 15 November
2014.
The Training of Trainers’ Course, as the second part of the training processes, was designed for Process Moderators whose role was intended to support integration of climate change adaptation into TFCA management plans and work plans, catalyse networking and change process initiated by first group of trainees and strengthening of a community of practice. The Process Moderators were drawn from park Management in TFCAs, Community Leaders and Local Authority representatives with the mandate to facilitate change processes on the ground that were started by their colleagues who participated in a training course from October 2013 to January 2014 and have been implementing cross-border change projects on climate change adaptation.
WESSA was chosen to execute this project on behalf of SADC, as host of its Regional Environmental Education Programme and a SADC Centre of Excellence on Human Capacity Development for Environment and Sustainability. Rhodes University provided the main facilitation of training of Process Moderators through the Environmental Learning Research Centre, its partners and key climate change scientists from the Peace Parks Foundation, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and others. The SADC REEP and Rhodes University enjoy a long history of successful collaboration on delivering capacity development in the SADC region. The ToT course is being registered by Rhodes University as a regional short course for future delivery.
Four Modules have been developed and are available to support the teaching and learning of the course.
